Capturing a Sunny Day in London

I absolutely love photographing London while the sun is out. When that great ball of fire in the sky basks the city in warm, glorious light, you get the feeling that the overall mood of the place is lifted and there is a feel good factor throughout the city.

Since starting this LC project to capture London and present it in my home-brew London Chrome style, I have taken hundreds of photos of the city in various weather conditions which show off London in different ways. It’s important to remember that with landscape photography the weather plays such a critical role when it comes to representing a particular mood or feeling, and portraying the story.

In a previous post, I wrote about creating a body of work and how finding a common theme across your images can be a great way to tell a story with your photos.

In this post, the common theme is photos taken in the glorious late afternoon sunshine. When the sun is lower in the sky, the taller buildings cast long shadows and that combined with my London Chrome editing style, creates a great contrast in the scene adding to the overall composition and impact in the image.

Along with the high contrast images the sun can create, below are examples of a bright, high key photo which can work really well when the light is slightly defused.

Summer 2018 was a fantastic time to capture London in the sun and produce high contrast images as we had some nice sustained sunshine and record temperatures. If you check my London Chrome Instagram page you will see photos taken in various conditions and at some point in the future, I plan to write more about capturing London and the differing moods the weather can provide.

Until next time.
